INSCT & SATSA Event: Film Screening

On Thursday, November 10, the Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism (INSCT) and SATSA are co-sponsoring a film screening of the award-winning documentary “Better This World.”  The film screening will be held in 275 MacNaughton Hall of the Syracuse University College of Law.  The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Professor Tucker Culbertson and Professor William Synder.  We hope to see you there!

Synopsis:  How did two boyhood friends from Midland, Texas wind up arrested on terrorism charges at the 2008 Republican National Convention?  Better This World follows the journey of David McKay (22) and Bradley Crowder (23) from political neophytes to accused domestic terrorists with a particular focus on the relationship they develop with a radical activist mentor in the six months leading up to their arrests.  A dramatic story of idealism, loyalty, crime, and betrayal, Better This World goes to the heart of the War on Terror and its impact on civil liberties and political dissent in post-9/11 America.

SATSA Holds Annual Excursion to Drone Training Facility at Hancock AFNG Base

On Saturday October 1, SATSA made its annual fall excursion to the MQ-9 Drone Training Facility at Hancock AFNG Base in Syracuse, NY.  Twenty-five SATA members attended the excursion, including graduate and law students from Syracuse University, as well as distinguished faculty from INSCT, the Maxwell School, and the Syracuse University College of Law.

Attendees were given an unclassified briefing by an intelligence unit officer on the intelligence cycle, the MQ-9 Reaper’s capabilities and history, and a tour of a command and control module.  The group was also given a guided walk around the MQ-9 UAV itself by a field maintenance technician.

Seeing these aircraft up close and speaking with experts operating them in the field on a daily basis was an exceptional experience.  We would like to thank the personnel of Hancock AFNG Base for making our first excursion of the year possible.
